Choosing a Mover: What to Look For

_DSC4344.jpg

Moving a household or business is a difficult job on it’s own. Factor in timelines, social dynamics, and every other varying detail and you've got your work cut out for you. Prior to making the decision to pull up stakes, there were many others regarding schools, places to work, etc. Moving can be one of the most stressful events in life. You’re more likely to hear about negative experiences than positive ones. Perhaps you’ve had one of your own. Opting for movers to relocate your belongings for you may just be an afterthought, but don’t overlook this decision.

When considering a mover, there are some key details to keep an eye out for when deciding who will help you with your relocation. If you’ve ever made a move, you know it requires immense effort and resources to make it as smooth as possible. The resources available to you, people involved, and organization process can make or break your moving experience. In order to ensure the smoothest possible process when it comes to packing up and hitting the road, you’ll want to vet your options. Take some time to save yourself and your family from what could be a great hassle.

Start with referrals and reviews

The most common first step is to first ask around to those you know about moving services they have utilized. Chances are, friends, family, co-workers, or businesses have hired a local mover and have an experience to share. If you are buying a house or renting, ask your real estate agent or rental company for local referrals.

Reviews are another helpful source via Google, Yelp, Facebook, and Better Business Bureau. Don’t rely just on the company’s website testimonials, see what is shared via reliable independent sources such as these. Be mindful of details with personal experiences and understand that tough clients may have more complaints.

As a local mover in the Northwest, we are broadly known and receive much of our business via referrals. We have worked with area businesses and residents through every season! Check out our reviews on Google.

Verify address and credibility

An address and business branding. Does the company have an office for welcoming customers and handling business? Look for a company with a base of operations, a name and a logo, marked uniform shirts/hats, hired employees, a reachable front desk or secretary, and the proper credentials as movers. If you are moving locally, a locally operated mover will value their place in the community and take great care of you and your belongings.

Years in business: Also consider the years of experience in the area. Newer companies may have great offers and deals but carry less reputation. ACE has been family operated in the Inland Northwest for over 10 years and counting with 30+ years experience. Our experience in the area has resulted in long lasting relationships with repeat customers!

License and insurance: Proper credentials include licensure and insurance. In-state company requirements vary by jurisdiction, but many will have a federal DOT number required to operate. You can check DOT carrier numbers to verify and check your state for requirements. Any reputable company will have this info readily available and should be happy to show you proof.

Get a quote

First, consider if you will be pre-packing, hiring do-it-all service to pack and move, or what your specific needs are. Quotes can be based on time spent in the process or the volume of belongings to be moved. You can give us a call and we can help you determine what your moving needs are and how we can meet them within your budget. Moving should never be an exhausting expense which is why we provide hourly rates for local moves. Be sure to include all of your belongings; the garage, attic, sheds, etc.

Red flag signs to watch out for

Some things to keep and eye out for:

  • Large-sum deposit. A reliable mover will not ask for an up-front deposit of more than 20% or any deposit at all until after the move. ACE requires no initial deposits.

  • Unmarked vans, trucks, and clothing. Smaller start up companies may have rented vans or unmarked clothing for small moves, but a reliable company will be clearly marked for assurance and trust. All of our equipment and movers are clearly and cohesively marked. ACE equipment is owned and well maintained.

  • Temporary or secondary agency hired help. Since movers will be touching and handling your belongings, you want to be assured they are background checked and clean-cut people for safety and integrity. Our staff is background checked, locally hired, and longstanding with our company. We keep the same movers with your move for familiarity and trust.

Getting your questions answered, concerns addressed, and building trust with the company you hire is what it’s all about because ultimately, you’re putting much of your tangible life in their hands!
